Prevention

North Whidbey Fire & Rescue places a strong emphasis on being proactive when it comes to fire prevention and community safety. Rather than waiting for emergencies to arise, the department is committed to educating residents, preparing local infrastructure, and promoting best practices that significantly reduce the risk of fire-related incidents and save lives. One of the cornerstones of this proactive approach involves raising awareness about the invisible threat of carbon monoxide (CO), often referred to as the “silent killer.” Because carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can accumulate rapidly from malfunctioning heating systems, gas appliances, or vehicle exhaust in enclosed spaces, North Whidbey Fire & Rescue urges every household to install and regularly test carbon monoxide alarms. These devices, along with traditional smoke detectors, are essential for early warning and can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. The department also stresses the importance of interlinked alarm systems in larger or multi-story homes, ensuring that if an alarm sounds in one area, the entire household is alerted.

Understanding that awareness is a critical element of safety, North Whidbey Fire & Rescue encourages all residents to stay informed about their local community evacuation zones. Wildfire and emergency evacuation routes are subject to change depending on conditions, and it’s vital that residents know not only which zone they live in but also the multiple routes available to exit the area safely. The department works in coordination with local emergency management to distribute up-to-date maps and evacuation procedures through community meetings, public materials, and digital platforms. In addition, families are strongly urged to develop and practice home exit drills to ensure that everyone, including children and elderly members, knows how to escape quickly and safely in the event of fire. Practicing these drills regularly, including both day and night scenarios, helps instill calm responses and improves the chances of a safe evacuation when every second counts.

For local businesses, North Whidbey Fire & Rescue promotes participation in the Knox Box program—an essential tool that enables firefighters and first responders to access secured buildings during emergencies without causing property damage. These tamper-proof, secure key boxes store building keys and are installed on the exterior of commercial properties, giving authorized personnel rapid entry in case of fire, alarm activation, or other critical incidents. In a fire situation, the ability to gain quick access can be the deciding factor in preventing a small incident from escalating into a major loss. The department continues to work closely with local business owners, providing guidance on Knox Box installation and ensuring that emergency contact information and floor plans are kept current.

Beyond structural fire prevention, North Whidbey Fire & Rescue is deeply engaged in reducing the risk and spread of wildland fires. The department promotes Firewise practices within neighborhoods, especially those bordering undeveloped or forested land. These practices include creating defensible space around homes, removing dead vegetation, using fire-resistant landscaping, and maintaining clean gutters and roofs free of debris. Community outreach programs also encourage residents to report potential hazards and to work together in organizing clean-up efforts that reduce combustible material in shared areas. By empowering the community with knowledge and encouraging collective action, the department helps create safer, more resilient neighborhoods capable of withstanding the growing threat of wildfires.

All of these efforts are rooted in the department’s overarching mission: protecting every member of the North Whidbey community. Whether through direct emergency response, public education, or collaborative programs with residents and businesses, North Whidbey Fire & Rescue takes a holistic approach to safety. By staying informed, preparing in advance, and adopting preventive measures, the community becomes an active partner in its own protection. Together, through mutual awareness and responsibility, we can ensure that North Whidbey remains not only a beautiful place to live but also a safe and fire-resilient one for generations to come
